Inside Alctron: The Pro-Audio Factory Behind an Overlooked Brand

12 Oct 2026

Sometimes professional audio equipment can almost be too inexpensive to be taken seriously.

Put a famous logo on a microphone, give it premium packaging and a premium price, and most musicians immediately assume there must be something special inside. Put the name of the factory itself on a product and sell it for a fraction of the price, and suddenly people start wondering what must be wrong with it.

That is, in many ways, the story of Alctron.

The short version:
Alctron is not simply an inexpensive audio brand sourcing generic products from different factories. It is a professional audio manufacturer in Ningbo, China, with its own production facilities, engineering, OEM manufacturing and in-house component production. Our relationship with Alctron started long before ScaleNordic existed.

We have been inside the factory, met the people behind the products and seen professional audio equipment being manufactured there. Over many years, we gained a close insight into both Alctron's own products and the OEM side of the professional audio industry.

Our Alctron story started long before ScaleNordic

Our relationship with Alctron did not begin with ScaleNordic. It goes back to Procom Music AS, the Norwegian professional audio and music distribution company founded by Robert Storm Olsen in 1996.

Procom Music worked with professional audio, musical instruments and related equipment for many years, representing and distributing products throughout the Scandinavian market. Around 2012, Procom Music took on the Alctron agency and distribution for Scandinavia.

That became the beginning of a long working relationship with Alctron and its factory in Ningbo, China. During the following years, we visited the factory several times, met the people behind the company and gained first-hand insight into how the products were developed and manufactured.

Alctron is a manufacturer first

Many professional audio companies are primarily design, marketing and brand organisations, while manufacturing is handled by specialist factories elsewhere. Alctron comes from the opposite direction.

Ningbo Alctron Electronics Technology Co., Ltd. is a dedicated professional audio manufacturer based in Ningbo, China. The company develops and manufactures microphones, audio electronics, stands, accessories and other equipment used in recording, broadcast, live sound and music production.

According to Alctron, the company has extensive in-house production capabilities, including manufacturing many important components itself rather than operating simply as an assembly company. Alctron also manufactures microphone capsules at its own production facility.

Why that matters:
There is a significant difference between a trading company buying finished products from different suppliers and a manufacturer with its own engineering, machining, electronics production, microphone capsule production, assembly and quality control.

Seeing the audio industry from inside an OEM factory

Those factory visits gave us a very different perspective on the professional audio industry. When you only see products at the retail end of the market, every brand appears to exist in its own separate world: different logos, different packaging, different marketing and sometimes dramatically different prices.

Inside a large OEM manufacturing facility, the industry can look rather different. During our years working with Alctron, we became familiar with the company's extensive OEM manufacturing activities for many of the world's largest and best-known professional audio brands.

We do not need to name those brands here. OEM relationships change over time, and equipment manufactured for another company may use completely different electronics, capsules, components, mechanical construction, testing procedures and quality requirements.

Behind the comparatively unfamiliar Alctron name is a manufacturer with extensive experience producing professional audio equipment for some of the leading companies in the industry.

OEM does not mean the same product with another logo

This is worth explaining because OEM manufacturing is frequently misunderstood. If the same factory manufactures equipment for several audio companies, that does not automatically mean the products are identical.

  • One company may provide its own complete design.
  • Another may specify a particular microphone capsule, transformer, circuit or component selection.
  • A third may work with the factory to develop a product from the beginning.
  • Mechanical construction, tolerances, testing procedures and quality-control requirements can also vary considerably.

The manufacturer supplies engineering and production capability. The brand determines what it wants manufactured. This is completely normal throughout the international electronics industry.

Then Alctron puts its own name on the equipment

This is where Alctron becomes particularly interesting. Alctron is not only an OEM manufacturer; the company also uses its manufacturing knowledge to develop professional audio products under the Alctron name.

Alctron does not carry the same international marketing structure, artist endorsement budgets or brand value as many famous professional audio companies. As a result, products with surprisingly serious specifications can reach the market at remarkably low prices – sometimes perhaps a little too low.

Can professional audio actually be too cheap?

It sounds strange, but from many years in the audio business we know that price strongly influences how customers perceive a product.

If a studio microphone costs €1,000, people often ask why it is so good. If another studio microphone costs €50, people often ask what must be wrong with it.

Of course, premium professional audio equipment can absolutely justify a higher price. Specialised microphone capsules, transformers, carefully selected components, tight production tolerances, extensive testing and low production volumes all cost money.

But not every difference in retail price comes from what is actually inside the product.

  • International marketing costs money.
  • Artist endorsements cost money.
  • Large sales organisations cost money.
  • Multiple distribution layers add margins.
  • Premium packaging costs money.
  • A globally recognised brand name has considerable commercial value.

Alctron has traditionally operated much closer to the manufacturing side of that equation.

We did not just represent Alctron – we sold it in substantial volumes

Our experience with Alctron was not limited to having the brand listed in a catalogue. During the Procom Music years, we sold Alctron products in substantial volumes throughout Scandinavia.

Several models became particularly strong sellers for us, including microphone preamps such as the MP100V2, MP73EQV2 and MP73X2, as well as tube condenser microphones such as the T190 and MK47.

These were products we knew from much more than specifications and brochures. We sold them over many years, supported customers using them and gained considerable practical experience with how they performed in studios and professional audio systems.

Some of the models from that period may still look familiar to musicians, studios and engineers who worked with professional audio equipment at the time.

Why this matters:
Some of the Alctron products we worked with were also manufactured in different versions for major international professional audio brands. The external design, electronics, components and specifications could vary between customers, but the manufacturing experience behind the products came from the same professional audio factory.

The T190 is a good example of why Alctron often surprised people. In our experience, it was a tube condenser microphone that sounded remarkably good for the money. During that period, we also saw comparable versions of this type of microphone sold under other branding at several times the price.

The MK47 was another model we sold in particularly strong numbers. Along with the T190, it showed how Alctron could offer traditional tube-condenser microphone concepts at prices that made this type of technology accessible to a much wider group of studios and musicians.

The same broader pattern could be seen with several of Alctron's microphone preamps. The MP100V2, MP73EQV2 and MP73X2 became familiar products to us because we sold so many of them. They demonstrated that Alctron was capable of producing serious analogue audio equipment while keeping pricing considerably below many more heavily marketed alternatives.

Experiences like these are one of the reasons we have never judged Alctron simply by the price printed on the box.

Some of the Alctron products still available at ScaleNordic

We still have a selection of Alctron products remaining from our former distribution business. Rather than looking only at the brand name, it is more interesting to look at what some of these products actually offer.

Alctron CS85 – multi-pattern studio condenser microphone

Alctron CS85 multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser microphone

The Alctron CS85 is a good example of why the Alctron range can sometimes look almost strangely inexpensive.

It is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone built around a 34 mm gold-plated diaphragm and offers three selectable polar patterns:

  • Cardioid
  • Omnidirectional
  • Figure-8

There is also a 10 dB attenuation pad and a 100 Hz low-frequency filter. This allows the CS85 to cover vocals, acoustic instruments, amplifiers, brass, room recording and many other studio applications.

For anyone who wants to experiment with different pickup patterns, it provides a lot of flexibility from a single microphone.

Alctron TH600 – a straightforward large-diaphragm condenser

Alctron TH600 large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone

The Alctron TH600 takes a more straightforward approach. It is a cardioid large-diaphragm FET condenser designed for studio recording, vocals, instruments, podcasting and general recording work.

The microphone uses a 34 mm diaphragm, covers 20 Hz–20 kHz and is supplied with a shockmount.

Not every microphone needs a long list of switches. Sometimes the most useful microphone is simply one you can place on a stand, connect to phantom power and start recording.

Alctron T05 – three pickup patterns with interchangeable capsules

Alctron T05 condenser microphone with interchangeable capsules

The Alctron T05 is one of the more interesting microphones in the remaining range.

Instead of electronically switching pickup patterns, the T05 uses interchangeable microphone capsules. The supplied capsule options allow cardioid, hypercardioid and omnidirectional operation.

The microphone uses a 22 mm gold-coated diaphragm and is particularly useful for acoustic instruments, strings, percussion, piano, room recording and other applications where a small-diaphragm condenser is appropriate.

Often overlooked:
Small-diaphragm condenser microphones may receive less attention than large studio vocal microphones, but they are among the most versatile tools in a microphone collection.

Alctron CU58 – USB recording without a separate audio interface

Alctron CU58 USB recording microphone

USB microphones are everywhere today. Podcasting, streaming, online communication and home recording have made them one of the largest microphone categories in the market.

Alctron was working with USB recording microphones long before the category became as popular as it is today.

The CU58 supports 24-bit/96 kHz recording and includes a headphone connection for direct monitoring. Controls on the microphone provide microphone gain, headphone volume, mute and direct-monitor mix adjustment.

For someone who wants a simple computer recording setup without purchasing a separate audio interface, it is a very practical solution.

Alctron GM602 – designed specifically for acoustic guitar

Alctron GM602 clip-on condenser microphone for acoustic guitar

Not every microphone should be designed for every possible application. The Alctron GM602 was designed specifically for acoustic guitar.

Its compact microphone capsule is mounted on a flexible gooseneck, allowing the microphone to be positioned directly on the instrument without requiring a conventional microphone stand. This can be particularly useful for live performance, rehearsal and compact recording setups.

Alctron also produced the GM612, designed for instruments including cello, saxophone, trombone and cornet.

Products like these demonstrate another side of Alctron: practical audio tools designed to solve very specific problems.

Alctron TMP-6 – 12AX7 tube microphone preamp

Alctron TMP-6 tube microphone preamplifier

The Alctron TMP-6 is perhaps one of the products that best demonstrates the unusual relationship between Alctron specifications and Alctron pricing.

The TMP-6 is a single-channel microphone and instrument preamplifier built around a 12AX7B tube. It provides adjustable gain together with phantom power, phase reverse, low-cut filtering and selectable tone settings.

A few years ago, simply seeing the words tube microphone preamplifier on a front panel usually meant you were looking at a considerably more expensive product.

That does not mean the TMP-6 should automatically be compared with every boutique tube preamp ever built. That would miss the point. The relevant question is how much useful audio equipment you receive for the money.

Alctron RD501 – compact microphone preamp

Alctron RD501 compact microphone preamplifier

The Alctron RD501 approaches microphone amplification from the opposite direction: no tube, no large enclosure and no attempt to look like a vintage studio product.

It is simply a compact single-channel microphone preamp offering up to 60 dB of gain. The front panel includes an LED level display together with phantom power, low-cut and phase controls.

This type of product may never become the centrepiece of a studio photograph, but it can be extremely useful when you simply need an additional microphone preamp.

Alctron was never only about studio microphones

The Alctron catalogue has always been considerably broader than microphones alone. Some of the remaining ScaleNordic products illustrate how wide the range became.

Alctron M6 – measurement microphone

The Alctron M6 is designed for acoustic measurement rather than conventional music recording. Used with suitable measurement software, this type of microphone can help analyse room response, loudspeaker systems and acoustic behaviour.

Alctron IM600 – drum and percussion microphone

The Alctron IM600 is a compact electret condenser microphone with a flexible gooseneck and integrated mounting system intended for drums and percussion. A compact mounting system can significantly reduce the number of conventional microphone stands surrounding a drum kit.

Alctron DC-8X – pedalboard power supply

The Alctron DC-8X provides multiple power connections for guitar and bass pedalboards. It is a simple example of the countless small audio products Alctron has produced over the years: not glamorous, but very useful when you need one.

Alctron XU-2 MKII – compact USB recording solution

The XU-2 MKII is a compact USB audio converter designed to connect conventional audio equipment to a computer recording setup.

Alctron PS-2 – simple A/B switching

The PS-2 is a straightforward A/B signal switcher. Professional audio systems depend on many products like this. They may not be exciting, but when you need one, you need one.

Why are these products now in the ScaleNordic Outlet?

The explanation is simple. Our history in professional audio started long before ScaleNordic.

Procom Music AS was established in Norway in 1996 and spent many years working with professional audio and music equipment in the Scandinavian market. Alctron became one of the brands we worked with from around 2012.

Years later, when the business was reorganised and ScaleNordic was established as a European operation, remaining inventory from several former distribution brands became part of the ScaleNordic outlet stock. Alctron is one of those brands.

Why the prices can look unusual:
These are remaining products from our former distribution operation. We are no longer building a Scandinavian distribution network around Alctron. We are selling the remaining inventory we still have.

The products did not suddenly become different products. Our business model changed. That is why some of the current outlet prices can appear unusually low compared with the features and specifications.

It also means that when an individual Alctron model is sold out, there may not be another shipment waiting behind it.

The strange psychology of professional audio

There is something interesting about how we buy audio equipment.

Technical specifications matter, but purchasing decisions are influenced by much more than specifications alone. We also buy:

  • Reputation – confidence built through years of experience with a brand.
  • Familiarity – products and names we already recognise and trust.
  • Design – how a product looks and how professionally it is presented.
  • Brand value – the perception created by marketing, history and market position.
  • Price confidence – sometimes a higher price simply makes a product feel more professional.

None of that is necessarily irrational. A strong reputation takes years to build, and good engineering, customer support, quality control and long-term product development all have real value.

But price is still not a technical specification.

A microphone does not know what it cost.
A preamp does not know whether the logo printed on its front panel is famous. And an experienced OEM manufacturer does not suddenly forget how to manufacture professional audio equipment when it puts its own name on the product.

What years of working with Alctron taught us

For us, Alctron has never been simply an unfamiliar inexpensive brand found in an online catalogue. Our experience with the company goes back to the Procom Music years, long before ScaleNordic was established.

Over the years, we:

  • Represented Alctron in the Scandinavian market.
  • Sold Alctron products in substantial volumes.
  • Worked directly with the company and its team.
  • Travelled to Ningbo, China.
  • Visited the Alctron factory several times.
  • Saw first-hand how the products were developed and manufactured.
  • Gained insight into the manufacturing environment behind both Alctron and its OEM activities.

That does not mean every Alctron product is automatically the right choice for every musician, studio or engineer. No manufacturer can make that claim.

What it does mean is that we judge Alctron from a very different perspective than someone seeing the name for the first time.

Behind the Alctron name is a company whose core business has been the development and manufacturing of professional audio equipment.

Frequently asked questions about Alctron

Is Alctron a real manufacturer?

Yes. Alctron operates its own manufacturing facilities in Ningbo, China and describes itself as a manufacturer rather than simply an assembly company.

Does Alctron manufacture OEM audio equipment?

Yes. OEM production has long been an important part of Alctron's business. During our years working with the company and visiting the factory, we became familiar with its manufacturing work for many leading international professional audio brands.

Are Alctron products identical to products made for other brands?

No. Sharing a factory does not mean two products are identical. Different customers may specify completely different electronics, microphone capsules, components, housings, tolerances and testing procedures.

Did you actually sell Alctron in significant quantities?

Yes. During the Procom Music years, Alctron was an active distribution brand for us in Scandinavia, and several models sold in substantial volumes. Products including the MP100V2, MP73EQV2, MP73X2, T190 and MK47 became particularly familiar to us through years of sales and customer experience.

Why are Alctron products so inexpensive at ScaleNordic?

The products currently available are remaining stock connected with our former Scandinavian distribution business. They are now being sold through the ScaleNordic outlet rather than as part of an active Scandinavian Alctron distribution programme.

Is inexpensive professional audio always poor quality?

No. Retail price can reflect manufacturing cost, but it can also reflect marketing, distribution structures, packaging, sales organisations and brand value. The more useful question is whether the product's design, features and specifications are suitable for the intended application.

Which Alctron microphone should I choose?

  • For a flexible multi-pattern studio microphone, consider the CS85.
  • For a conventional large-diaphragm cardioid studio condenser, look at the TH600.
  • For acoustic instruments and interchangeable pickup patterns, the T05 or TK120 may be more appropriate.
  • For direct USB recording, consider the CU58.

Our final advice

Do not buy an Alctron product simply because it is cheap. Buy it if it solves the problem you have.

  • If you need a multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser, look at the CS85.
  • If you need a straightforward studio condenser, look at the TH600.
  • If you record acoustic instruments, look at the T05, TK120, GM602 or GM612.
  • If you need another microphone preamp, look at the RD501 or TMP-6.
  • If you need acoustic measurement, look at the M6.

And if the product happens to cost considerably less than you expected, that is not necessarily a reason to avoid it.

Sometimes professional audio equipment does not need an expensive story around it. It just needs to do the job.
