Microphone Preamp with High-Pass Filter
FetHead Filter is a high-quality, phantom-powered in-line preamp. It features a built-in high-pass filter with a 220Hz cutoff (other frequencies available upon request), which reduces excessive low frequencies/proximity effects that some microphones, such as long ribbon microphones, may exhibit. The filter elements are not directly in the signal path but are used on the components that set the amplifier's gain in FetHead Filter. This ensures frequency dependency and preserves the sonic characteristics of the FetHead Filter.
Which Microphones Benefit from This
Proximity effect is a phenomenon where there is an increase in low-frequency response when moving the microphone closer to the sound source. The closer you get, the greater the bass boost. This effect can be desirable for achieving a deep radio voice, but on other sources, it may be problematic. Our FetHead Filter helps reduce excessive low-frequency buildup, guaranteeing a clean sound.
In Use
FetHead Filter can be attached directly to any XLR-equipped microphone or anywhere in the signal chain between the microphone and the preamp/mixer. The electronics are housed in a rugged metal chassis with a balanced XLR female input and a balanced XLR male output, making it durable enough for home, studio, or touring use.
Protects the Microphone
Some older ribbon microphones cannot tolerate phantom power. FetHead Filter uses phantom power to drive its circuit but does not send phantom power to the microphone, so you can be assured that your ribbon microphones are safe.
